Chapter Thirteen

Flann gripped Abby’s shoulders with what little bit of strength she had left and buried her face in the curve of Abby’s neck. Abby stroked her back, her fingertips dancing along the ridges of her spine and shoulder blades, finally coming to rest in the hollow above her ass.

“Welcome home,” Abby murmured in her ear.

Flann chuckled. “It certainly was. Did I do anything special to deserve that? Because I want to be sure to do it again soon.”

“If I tell you, you’ll only get a big head.”

“Bigger, you mean?” Flann kissed Abby’s jaw. “I love you.”

“Mm. Really, I just don’t want to waste an opportunity, especially when we have the place to ourselves.” Abby inched her thigh between Flann’s. “I was afraid you were going to end up in the OR all night when that girl with belly pain came in.”

“Even if I’d had to take out her appendix, I still would’ve gotten home before the kid if I’d known you were here waiting.”

“You might be fast, baby,” Abby patted her butt, “but that doesn’t mean the OR would have been.”

Flann eased her weight onto one arm and rested her head on her bent elbow. “Yeah, funny how that works.” She kissed Abby. “How did things go with the new crew today?”

“Better than I expected. Matt and his people know what they’re doing. This isn’t their first assignment and they settled in right away.”

“I checked on the guy they transported from the car accident right before I left,” Flann said. “His belly still looked pretty quiet. He’s got neurological loss from T-12, though.”

Abby sighed. “I know, I talked to the neurosurgeons too. Wait and watch, I guess.”

“So far. It made a difference, him getting here by air mobile. Every minute counts with that kind of injury.” Flann idly twirled a lock of Abby’s hair around her fingertip. She wasn’t happy to have Brody back out of the blue, and right in the heart of her universe at that, but she couldn’t argue with having an air mobile unit on-site. Their trauma and ER census would skyrocket, and with residents and PAs to train and a bottom line to shore up, they needed the patients.

“I agree,” Abby said, “and I called the fire rescue incident commander to let him know his team made the right call handing off to air mobile, and they’d made a difference in that man’s outcome.”

“How’d he take it?”

Abby laughed. “You know there’s going to be a bit of a turf scuffle. But these guys have seen plenty out there, and they know what the red zones are in time to definitive care. I trust them to make the right calls, even when there’s a little growling going on between the big dogs.”

“Matt strikes me as being a pretty good politician. He seems to have gotten everything he wanted here so far—a slick new helicopter, his own crew, and operational control.”

“You mean he got everything Presley wanted him to get.”

“That might be a better way of putting it.
